Conversations are the way knowledge workers discover what they know, share it with their colleagues, and in the process create new knowledge for the organization. The panoply of modern information and communication technologies -- for example, computers, faxes, e-mail -- can help knowledge workers in this process. Many organizations report that on-line conversations tend to be formal, distant, and scattered. The desirable qualities of authentic connection, mutual understanding, coherence, and generative collaboration often seem elusive over a network.
We are convening this Community of Inquiry and Practice to:
- help organizations and those working with them to inquire into and practice methods for having more coherent on-line conversations that generate knowledge
- provide virtual collaborative learning environments where participants experience first hand the vital importance of clear purpose, useful conversational practices, facilitation methods, and appropriately tailored groupware to support them
- learn from each other how organizations are creating virtual workspaces that engage everyone's creative potential more fully
- explore how to reach deeper levels of shared meaning and alignment in and through cyberspace
- bring together people with experience, expertise, and challenges in any of the areas that bear on these issues "to discover what they know, share it with their colleagues, and in the process create new knowledge."
